Termite Inspections Print E-mail
Your second most important asset you have!!

Your home...

...of course, your family is first.

Here at Darwin pest control we pride ourselves in giving our customers a professional and friendly service together with advice based on what is right for you. Each home owner has different needs and requires an individual approach to their pest management. One thing they all have in common though is the need to have regular termite inspections.

The building code of Australia highly recommends 6 monthly and no longer than 12 monthly inspections of properties. Here in Darwin we highly recommend 6 monthly inspections for high risk properties. How do I know if my home is high risk you ask?

There are some things that you can assess yourself to see if you fall into this category. These are; do you live in the ‘Top End’ and...

  1. Is your home built on a slab?
  2. Are the walls built with a timber frame?
  3. Is your roof truss made from timber?
  4. Does any timber contact the ground and attach to the house?
  5. Has it been more than 12 months since your last inspection?
  6. Does your property have large trees or are there any nearby?
  7. Has there been any previous termite treatment done?
  8. Are there any garden beds adjacent to the home?
  9. Is there any prolonged moisture (leaks etc) around the home?
  10. Are you aware of any neighbours that have a problem?

If you answered yes to two or more of these questions then unfortunately you fall into the high risk category, don’t panic.

The main thing now is that you do something about it.

For some reason termites are one of those things that a lot of people don’t think about until it is too late. This is because they hide themselves very well. In most cases you won’t know that they are there until they have made themselves known. This usually means that they have consumed a large portion of your property. In most cases insurance will not cover the damage so is it not better to spend a few dollars each year through an inspection than to fork out large sums of money for treatments and repairs down the track?

At Darwin pest control we do a thorough examination of your property which includes all accessible areas of the home, sheds and the yard, including all trees. Part of our report gives recommendations that you as a home owner can do to reduce the risk of termite attack. We include free of charge any quotes for any treatments that we feel are necessary for your situation. If we feel that little or nothing needs to be done, we will advise you accordingly. Beware some pest inspectors will nearly always recommend treatments, either liquid or expensive termite bait systems. If we feel that there is no real need for a treatment we will not try to convince you otherwise.

Our report includes colour photographs of any problem areas that we find to assist you with its location.

Finally, there are some things you need to know about inspections. The majority of pest companies, including us, do what is called a visual termite inspection. This basically means that we look, tap, listen and use devices that give us indications of any termite activity. We do not break open walls, empty cupboards or damage any property during the inspection unless we have specific approval from the owner. This means that we are limited in what we can do.

It is a known fact amongst experienced inspectors that we should never disturb any termite activity located other than to allow for identification of the species. This goes a long way to assisting in the treatment because termites are usually very shy. If they are disturbed they may leave that area and therefore be harder to treat effectively. A good inspection should take no less than 1 hour (average is 1.5 hours) for a standard 3 bedroom home. If you have used a pest company that has taken less time than this, then you may want to question, how thorough were they?

The reports these days are mainly written by insurance legal eagles due to the high litigation rate. This means that they are written in a way that is often confusing and hard to follow. Our reports are user friendly and have the added bonus of photos to assist you. We are always available to discuss your report and explain any of the comments or recommendations.

Any visual termite inspection is only an aid to help detect the presence of termite activity.

No company will give you a 100% guarantee that they will not miss anything but a thorough examination by an experienced inspector will go a long way to detecting the possibility of hidden termite attack.

We hope this has helped you in making your decision.
